Transport of a Fast Blood Sample
A fast specimen is preferred for most tests performed on blood. Fat particles can interfere with analytical procedures in non-fasting specimen. Fasting is when you don't eat or drink for 9 to 12 hours before testing.
It is helpful to indicate the patient's age and blood type so that appropriate reference ranges can be assigned. The technologists will sometimes use patient age to choose the appropriate initial sample dilution. The information the label can be read if the ends of the label adhere to each other.
The specimen must be kept frozen until it reaches the laboratory, and it must be transported insulated containers with plenty of dry ice. Thawed specimen are not suitable for analysis. If a specimen is received, you will be asked to submit an adequate specimen.
Do not send objects that are sharp or breakable. Medical waste may violate the law and create a health hazard if it is sent as a specimen. Before transportation, it is advisable to discard used needles or sharps.
The needle must be removed and the cap on the syringe must be capped before the test can be performed. There is a chance of a leak from the specimen container. Trypticase soy agar with or without 5% sheep blood or Chocolate agar is the best way to submit a bacterial isolates for transportation.
