If the flag is on and the packet exceeds the MTU, the packet is dropped by the router. Path MTU discovery is the process of discovering the MTU of all devices on a network path. If the example above were to be used, the computer and server would identify the requirements of the other computer and adjust their packet size to avoid the risk of fragmenting.
